Balloons, Cars, and Birthdays - What a Weekend!

This weekend was not only the Plano Balloon Festival and Car Show, but also my dad's birthday!  It was an eventful weekend full of unexpected hiccups and laughs.  You know, typical family time.

"Balloon Aircraft 8" - Plano, Texas
The celebration started off Thursday night, or technically it was REALLY early Friday morning.  My brother flew in from New York as a surprise for my father's birthday.  The bro was set to get in at 10 p.m. Thursday night, which was a bit of a complication for my mom as it was but it got so much more complicated as the night went on.  See, my parents are usually in bed by 9:30 or 10, 10:30 if they are having a late night, so my mom taking a joy ride at 9 would have raised some eyebrows.  Mom had a cover story all worked out.  She was going to say that her friend who lives alone was ill and wanted mom to come over.  As luck would have it, Thursday afternoon my dad actually runs into this friend, so mom's sick story wouldn't work anymore.  Mom is a very honest person and couldn't come up with another feasible cover story, so she broke down and told dad that the bro was coming.  And things went downhill from there...
"1938 GM Pontiac 1" - Plano, Texas
It was storming here Thursday night and Texans don't do well with anything other than sunshine.  Snow and ice shuts down the whole state.  Really, I'm not kidding.  Due to the storms, the airport was turning away planes, which meant that the bro's 6 hour flight from NYC flew a few circles around the state of Texas, made an extra fuel stop in Tulsa, OK, circled the state a few more times and finally landed some time around midnight.  Luckily the flight landed safely and, other than mom and the bro being a little sleep deprived, the only bad part was having to listen to mom lament about the 2 hours that she spent driving around the airport waiting for the bro.  And we did hear about it!  At one point mom was giving us all an excruciatingly detailed run down of the drive to the airport and how there was some confusing signage but she managed to make the right choices and made it to the airport just in time to wait 2 hours.  We're all making snide comments, but mom just kept plowing through her story which made everyone laugh.  She's a keeper!
