Dumpster Pools

Yep, you read that correctly: today's post is about Dumpster Pools.  Specifically the dumpster pools created by Progressive Waste Solutions for an event last month in Dallas' Design District.  John Gustafson, the vice president for Progressive Waste Solutions' southern central region said that "the dumpster pool was a creative, and cool, way to support an important local arts program."

I have a couple of friends that work at Progressive and I heard about these pools before they were finished and could not wait to share with all of you out there on the interweb.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the event, but one of the planners, one of my friends at Progressive, was kind enough to share these photos.
Progressive supplied two dumpsters, which were lined with a custom liner, surrounded by a pool deck complete with umbrellas, fitted with a swim-up bar, seating and lounge areas, and all under the careful scrutiny of a lifeguard tower.
The dumpsters were painted by Dallas' award-winning street art collective Sour Grapes and Frisco's Sharon van Antwerpen, making this pool truly one of a kind.
The local fire department even helped out with the water needed to fill these beauties.
The Dallas Observer stated that "The Dumpster pool is perhaps the most brilliant of brilliant summer ingenuities."  Dallas Morning News did an article entitled “Dumpster Diving in the Design District,” and also posted pictures of the unique attraction.  Dallas' NBC Channel 5 even ran coverage of the event.
Even though school has started, here in Texas we still have another month of summer.  What clever ways have you cooled off this summer?
And now a little Progressive Waste Solutions bragging (no, I'm not getting kickbacks from the company): Progressive has a LEED certified recycling facility here in McKinney.  They provide the residential, commercial, and McKinney Independent School District recycling service for the city of McKinney.
