Odysseus Chamber Orchestra Presents A Soldier's Tale

The second event that is taking place on February 8th is the Odysseus Chamber Orchestra's A Soldier's Tale!  I don't know about where you guys grew up, but in my elementary school we had field trips, not only to the Dallas Symphony, but also to the opera and I loved it all!  I wish that I could play an instrument, but I was not particularly studious in the piano lessons that my parents got me as a child.  I actually loved my piano lessons because my teacher was an older lady and we would play the piano for a while and then end every lesson playing dominoes...I got really good at dominoes.

The Soldier’s Tale is is a stunning theater + live music work for narrator, actors, dancers and a 7 piece orchestral ensemble – composed by the legendary Igor Stravinsky and with text written by Swiss author C.F. Ramuz based on a Russian folk tale drawn from the collection of Alexander Afanasyev.

The story is a dark Faustian fable that tells of a soldier who sells his magic fiddle to the devil, who promises to grant his every wish in return – which inevitably has its consequences.

The music is a mix of Stravinsky’s neo-classical style and his more modern composition – sounding almost jazz-like at times – for an intriguing combination of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, and percussion.
This February, Odysseus Chamber Orchestra is very proud to present the first first full music, theater and dance performance of the work in the North Texas area at the Heard Craig Hall in McKinney.

The Odysseus Chamber Orchestra will be joined by Choreographer and Stage Director: Amiti Perry

Not only is the orchestra performing, but there will also be a pre-concert presentation beginning at 2:15 and there will also be a dance performance accompanying the orchestra.  The Heard-Craig Hall, located at 306 N Church St, McKinney, Texas, is a lovely, more intimate setting so you'll get the opportunity to really enjoy the musicians and dancers.  It will be a busy Sunday, but I think we can do it: Head to heARTS for ART at 1:30 p.m. for some arts and crafts fun, sneak out to enjoy the music and movement of the Odysseus Chamber Orchestra at 3 p.m., and we should be able to make it back to heARTS for ART for some last minute bids on the silent auction goodies!  Are you in?!?
